President Jonathan, Tuesday, sacked the Inspector General of Police Suleiman Abba. We take a look at some of the news that surrounded his tenure in office.
President Goodluck Jonathan on Aug. 1, 2014, appointed Abba as acting IGP.
Abba replaced former IGP Muhammed Abubakar, who retired after 35 years of public service on July 31.
The Police Council on November 04, 2014 confirmed the appointment of Mr Suleiman Abba as the substantive Inspector-General of Police (IGP).
The Special Adviser on Media and Publicity to the President, Dr Reuben Abati, confirmed this development to State House correspondents after the meeting of the council at the Presidential Villa, Abuja.
According to him, the IGP is now admitted into the Police Council by virtue of his new appointment.

Abba takes over as Abubakar bows out
Following the appointment of Suleiman Abba as the 17th Indigenous Inspector-General of Police by President Goodluck Jonathan, the new IG on Auguest 01, 2014 took over from former Police boss, Mohammed Abubakar (rtd) with a pledge that “I will do whatever is necessary to bring excessive violent crimes in the country to a halt”.
“So far, the findings do not indicate that the Federal Government is involved in either of the two incidents.”
The Inspector-General of Police, Mr Suleiman Abba, on October 30, 2014 ordered the withdrawal of policemen attached to the office of the Speaker, Alhaji Aminu Tambuwal.
The order was contained in a statement issued by the Force spokesman, Mr Emmanuel Ojukwu, an Acting Commissioner of Police in Abuja.
The statement said the action was because of Tambuwal’s defection from the PDP to APC.
The police defended its stand, stating that it was done “having regard to the clear provision of section 68(1)(g) of the 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria as amended’’.

The speaker defected on Wednesday shortly before the House adjourned sitting till Dec. 3.
The All Progressives Congress (APC) on November 27, 2014 condemned the Inspector-General of Police Suleiman Abba for daring to say he does not recognize Rt. Hon. Aminu Tambuwal as the Speaker of the House of Representatives, and for weaving a web of lies to cover up the real reasons the police invaded the National Assembly.
In a statement in Osogbo, Thursday, by its National Publicity Secretary, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, the party said by refusing to recognize a Speaker who was duly elected by 360 members of the House of Representatives, and a Speaker who has neither been impeached by those who elected him nor removed by the Court, the police boss has thumbed his nose at the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.

The Speaker, House of Representatives, Mr. Aminu Tambuwal, requested a Federal High Court in Abuja to summon the Inspector-General of Police, Mr. Suleiman Abba, to for disobeying the court order.
ADC to the wife of a late dictator: That is the only nugget in the profile of the Inspector General of Police, IGP, Suleiman Abba.
When on August 1, 2014, he was appointed as acting IGP, the only, perhaps, notable accomplishment in a manner of speaking, was his service as ADC to Mariam Abacha, wife of late maximum dictator, Sani Abacha. Those who appointed him would have seen in him something unique. That he was chosen to do that job speaks volume of his person. Without prejudice to competence, maturity and good sense of people in the military and the Police, being appointed to serve as an ADC to a state governor or the President and Commander-in-Chief in Nigeria, is not as straight forward as appointing the CEO of a blue chip multinational firm using a global best practices grid of performance or competence quotient.
