BENIN—THE Primate of the Orthodox Anglican Communion, Archbishop Christopher Umane, has warned against any plot by the Presidency to remove the chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, Prof. Attahiru Jega, saying that such an action will plunge the nation into avoidable crisis.
The cleric, who spoke to journalists yesterday in Benin City, Edo State, expressed fears over the future of the nation’s democracy, lamenting that rather than pray for the best candidate to emerge, men of God abandoned prayers for money and power, which according to him, was creating more problems for Nigerians.
He said: “The quarrel over card readers is funny because when you use it, you cannot rig the election and that is why you see a section of our politicians kicking against it. And that is why they are asking Jega to even resign. We must use card readers. You can see people being sponsored to go to court to contest even the usage of PVCs and the card reader just because they want to rig the elections.”
