LAGOS—AHEAD of the 2015 Presidential election, Governor Babatunde Fashola of Lagos State, yesterday urged Lagos residents to be mindful of whom to vote for, claiming the incumbent President had betrayed the trust bestowed on him in the 2011 general elections when he canvassed for Lagos support.

He spoke during the hand-over of the newly-reconstructed Yaya Abatan Road,in Ifako-Ijaiye Local Council Development Area, LCDA, to the people of the community, pleading with the community to take ownership of the road as it was built with tax payers’ money.

Speaking on the 2015 general elections, Fashola said “At this instance, is democracy good? Which party do you belong to? We will come back to discuss this later. I discover you are already expecting us. Very soon, we will get back to you. Ifako-Ijaiye has become small London.

“Our opponents criticised us that we are running an elitist government. They said we work for people living in Ikoyi and Lekki alone. Even if we are working for the elite alone, both the rich and poor are complaining and suffering under their government.

“They do not fix power problem. They are not bothered about insecurity in the country. They are just generating revenue for themselves. The media asked their leader about the state of the nation. He said everything was okay and that the country had a billionaire. He said people now own a lot of private jets. They do not remember Lagos residents. But they are coming back to seek your votes. Will you give him? Please, do not give them your votes.”

On the 2.9kilometre length road with seven connecting inner-city roads, covered drains, pedestrian walkways, speed breakers and streetlights, the governor said the project was in redemption of his electoral promise to speed up development in all parts of the state.

Earlier, Commissioner for Works and Infrastructure, Dr Obafemi Hamzat, said the road was a testimony of democratic dividends, saying the road was strategic as it linked the area to places like Iju-Ishaga, Ogba and other adjoining locations.

Hamzat said 987 jobs were created during the construction of the road, adding that the project provided empowerment to others.
