The Inspector General of Police, Mohammed Abubakar has warned Politicians to stop making inflammatory statement that such statements as the memo written by the Governor of Adamawa State to the forum of 19 Northern States governors will not be condoned henceforth.

Emphasing that such statements are capable of desecrating our national symbol and identity, and promoting a regime of lawlessness, the IGP vowed that any of such utterances will be met with appropriate legal sanctions.

He disclosed that the unrelenting war against terrorism and other related crimes must be won with the cooperation of all Nigerians.

A statement in this regard signed by the Force Public Relations officer, CSP Frank Mba said, “Worried by the incessant resort by some Nigerians to the use of unguarded, inflammatory, and unsubstantiated statements, some of which are capable of causing the breach of public peace, the Inspector-General of Police, MD Abubakar, has issued a stern warning to those in the habit of making such statements to desist from doing so forthwith”.

“He notes that much as the Force is not ignorant of the fundamental rights of the citizens such as the Rights to freedom of speech, it will not condone any such provocative, divisive and inciting comments that are clearly uncorroborated by any fact or evidential proof”.

“The IGP, who notes that such statements are capable of desecrating our national symbol and identity and promoting a regime of lawlessness, warns that any of such utterances will be met with appropriate legal sanctions”.

“The IGP therefore, urges all Nigerians to emulate the former Head of State, General Muhammadu Buhari and others who recently have boldly taken a firm stance against terrorism”.

Continuing it said, “The IGP maintains that the present times call for such courage and uncommon patriotism from all opinion leaders, adding that the unrelenting war against terrorism and other related crimes must be won with the cooperation of all Nigerians”.

It would be recalled that last Thursday, at the enlarged National Security Council meeting summoned by President Jonathan, Governor Nyako was mandated to read the memo he wrote to the hearing of all his colleagues and the security chiefs, after which persons holding such sensitive offices were advised to desist from making such unsubstantiated and inflammatory statements.

Earlier, prominent Nigerians had expressed misgivings against such unguarded memos or statements from Governor Nyako. They included Colonel Abubakar Umar (rtd), former Military Administrator of Kaduna State and Brigadier General Buba Marwa (rtd).

On his part, Gen. Marwa lampooned Nyako for his ‘ill conceived letter’ to Northern Governors which accused the Presidency of waging genocide in the North East.

Insisting that “what the country needed now was non partisan approach in tackling the security challenges” Marwa said “I must first of all state very clearly that Nyako letter do not represent the opinion of Adamawa state.

“Nyako’s statement apart from its incoherence was to say the least disgraceful, shameful, embarrassing to the military constituency and most unbecoming of a Retired Admiral, former Service Chief, and Executive Governor” he added.

Governor, Murtala Nyako had in the memo accused the federal government of using the security forces to perpetrate genocide against the North under the disguise of fighting Boko Haram terrorism which he described as phantom.

He also said President Goodluck Jonathan was from the same South Eastern part of the country who during the early 1960’s, joined hands to kill sons of the North including their revered leader, the ‘Sadauna’, an issue many have interpreted to mean that Governor Nyako is trying to instigate a civil war.
