Sterling Bank showed class to dominate the sprint events of the 2013 Nigeria Bankers Games athletics with Alekwo Chidozie claiming double gold medals in the 100m and 200m. Alekwo returned a time of 11.18 seconds to win the 100m and a time of 22.92 seconds to finish tops in the 200m race.

But it was Fidelity Bank that continued their monopoly of the women sprints even in the absence of record holder, Vivian Ezenwoko, leaving the tracks for Mary Linus and Hannah Ogbebor to clean out the gold in the women 100m and 200m respectively.

Linus returned a time of 14.05 seconds to beat her colleagues, Hannah Ogbebor and Omotola Johnson in the 100m sprint. Ogbebor in turn took the 200m gold ahead of Linus and Johnson to complete Fidelity Bank’s success in the women 100m and 200m events held at the University of Lagos Sports Complex.

Registering their presence in the Athletics event was First Bank, winners of the 4 x 100m relay for men.

Intent on making up for their exit from the football event, Sterling Bank also claimed the gold in the Tennis doubles event, defeating Fidelity Bank that made do with the Silver medal.

Sterling Bank has thus far amassed seven gold medals and a silver and bronze to top the overall medals table and has thus displaced Fidelity Bank, overall winners in the last two editions since the introduction of other events to the Bankers Games program.

With just one gold medal remaining to be won from the football event finals, Sterling Bank has established an unassailable lead and are waiting to be crowned at the closing ceremonies on Sunday at the Onikan Waterfront Stadium. The football final is between Skye Bank and UBA.
