FEDERATION of Informal Workers of Nigeria, FIWON, has faulted the decision by the Senate to make leaders of the National Assembly receive life pension, saying it shows the level of insensitivity of the senators to the mood of the nation.
FIWON in a statement by its General Secretary, Gbenga Komolafe, said “Nigerian working people in the Informal economy also view with utmost concern that at a time most of their children are at home due to closure of the universities and polytechnics, Nigerian Senators actually decided to pay the leadership of the National Assembly life pension.”
“This decision is even more irksome given the fact that over 90% of Nigerian working people especially in the informal sectors enjoy absolutely no social security while their agitation for same has so far received little attention. It is a decision that will also shoot up the humongous salaries and emolument of public officials which already gulps a disproportionate percentage of public expenditure leaving very little for development.”
