NIMASA warns over abuse of waterways

APEX maritime regulator, Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency has warned the people of  Ilaje in Ondo State against indiscriminate dumping of refuse on the water.

Assistant director, radio survey in NIMASA, Dejo Taiwo, who gave the warning during an awareness campaign on maritime safety and pollution control embarked upon by the agency in the state said more than 1,000 passengers were being exposed to death daily due to lack of life saving equipment such as life jackets, life buoys and abuse of right of ways in the narrow creeks.

At Igbokoda, the vice chairman of the Ilaje Local Government, Richard Temituro told NIMASA officials that lives had been lost in the sea due to lack of safety equipment adding that people were being disturbed by hurricane on the sea.

Temituro added that majority of the members of the communities were fishermen and the lack safety jackets and fire extinguisher and commended the agency for the safety campaign.
