LAGOS State chapter of National Union of Road Transport Workers NURTW, has directed its members in the 37 Local Council Development Areas, LCDAs, of the State to get spaces suitable for motor parks as the existing ones in the 20 local government cannot cope with its membership capacity.

The step became necessary so that the body can meet up with the new Traffic Law, recently signed by the State governor. Deputy state secretary of the Union, Comrade Paul Ogini, said in an interview with Vanguard that the union was determined to support the state government’s move in making the law functional.

Ogini said that to adhere to the law, the union had earlier presented its demand to the government which promised to render necessary assistance.  Among other things, the union wants the government to provide not less than two motor parks in each LCDA to add to the existing ones in the 20 local governments.

Ogini said: “We don’t want to be seen as rogues, that is why we implored the government to provide more motor parks so that we can stop operating on the roads. Any commercial driver who refuses to adhere to the Traffic Law will be sanctioned. We have deployed our task force officials to the roads to enforce the Law.”

He said the union will map out strategies to stop miscreants who parade themselves as NURTW members to collect dues from motorists outside the motor parks stressing that the union will use everything at its disposal to stop operations on the roads.

He added: “We shall try our best to comply by the rules without due harassment by law enforcement agents. The task force has been mandated to stop illegal activities on the high ways.”
