Fuel discount: Group commends Ojulari, backs NNPCL reforms

Group CEO of NNPC Ltd, Mr Bashir Ojulari

The Coalition of Citizens Groups for Good Governance has commended Bayo Ojulari, group chief executive officer of the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL), over the planned 30-day petrol discount and measures aimed at improving transparency and operational efficiency at the company.

The coalition described the planned discount as a welcome initiative that could provide temporary relief to Nigerians grappling with high fuel prices and rising transportation costs.

In a statement on Saturday, signed by its national president, Dr Nath Oguche, and Chidumga Odinkalu, the group said the initiative, alongside the introduction of self-service smart pumps and efforts to strengthen accountability, reflected a commitment to institutional reforms and better service delivery.

“The planned fuel discount is a welcome development, particularly at a time when Nigerians are grappling with high fuel prices and rising transportation costs,” the statement said.

The coalition commended NNPCL’s leadership for supporting measures that could ease the financial pressure on households and businesses, adding that initiatives addressing citizens’ economic concerns deserved recognition.

It also praised the company’s reported efforts to curb corruption and improve transparency, saying the introduction of new technologies and operational reforms could strengthen public confidence in the national oil company.

“Beyond the fuel discount, we are encouraged by the innovations being introduced under Ojulari’s leadership, including self-service smart pumps and efforts to strengthen transparency in the company’s operations,” the group said.

The coalition said public institutions should be assessed not only by their policies and announcements but also by the tangible benefits they deliver to citizens.

It added that reforms aimed at reducing corruption, improving efficiency and making services more accessible could improve NNPCL’s operations and contribute to the wider economy.

The group, however, urged the company’s management to sustain its reform efforts and ensure that the benefits reached Nigerians across the country.

“We urge the management to sustain the momentum while ensuring that the benefits reach Nigerians across the country,” the statement added.

The coalition also called on NNPCL to provide clear information about initiatives intended to benefit consumers and ensure transparency in their implementation.

It urged other public institutions to adopt practical innovations that improve service delivery, strengthen accountability and address citizens’ needs.

The group said sustained reforms at NNPCL could enhance efficiency in Nigeria’s petroleum sector and demonstrate the importance of accountable leadership in public administration.
