ABUJA—Conference of Speakers’ of State Legislatures of Nigeria, yesterday, constituted  a six member Adhoc committee to collate proposals and memoranda from the State Houses of Assembly and the public for the planned constitutional amendment of the 1999 constitution by the National Assembly.

Chairman of the Adhoc Committee is Speaker, Enugu State House of Assembly, Mr. Eugene Odo,  while the Secretary is the Administrative Secretary in the Conference Secretariat, Mr. Busari Sarafiddin.

Other members of the Committee are Speaker, Benue State House of Assembly, Mr  David Iorhemba for North Central; Akwa Ibom Speaker, Mr Samuel Ikon for South South zone; Kano Speaker, Mr Gambo Sallahu for North West Zone, Yobe State Speaker, Mr  Adamu Dogo for North East zone and Mr  Adesina Samuel, the Ondo State Speaker for South West zone.

Briefing newsmen after a meeting yesterday, Chairman of the Conference and Speaker, Gombe State House of Assembly, Mr Inuwa Garba, said the proposals will form part of the amendment process, which will be submitted to the main committee for scrutiny before they are presented to the National Assembly.

He said that the Conference deliberated on issues of national concern, such as state of insecurity in the country and resolved that urgent steps be taken by both the security agencies and the governments to tame the rising tide of insecurity in the country.

He said: “We met and discussed the issues relating to socio-economic and political development of this country and security issues, we believe need our attention as leaders. We equally discussed the upcoming review of the constitution, which is very paramount.

“We also discussed extensively how we are going to be open and in this responsibility, so that for the second time, we produce the second phase of the amendment. And with that the conference of Speakers, we agreed to set up a Committee, which is going to serve as our adhoc Committee for the Constitutional Review.”
