ENUGU —THE Action Congress of Nigeria, ACN, has vowed to wrestle power from the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, and All Progressives Grand Alliance, APGA, in South East zone in the next elections, saying it has the capacity to dislodge the two parties and enthrone democratic governments in the zone.
At the inauguration of a three-man caretaker committee, Enugu State chapter of the party pending the conduct of the state congress, the party leaders said they would not rest until the entire South East states were brought under their control.
National Vice Chairman of the party in South East zone and former deputy governor of Anambra State, Dr. Chudi Nwike, who inaugurated the committee, said ACN remained the party to beat come 2015, especially in South East zone and the country at large.
He stressed that the party had all it takes to dislodge the PDP, because it had remained strong and focused since it came on board because of the calibre of politicians in its leadership.
According to the zonal vice chairman, the 3-man caretaker committee was put in place as directed by the party’s national secretariat in Abuja with a view to preparing the ground for the enthronement of an elected executive committee during a congress.
While appealing to members in the state to accord the committee all the needed cooperation and support to enable it succeed in the task of repositioning the party, Nwike reminded the committee members to see the assignment as a call to service and not avenue to witch-hunt or exclude any body.
He urged the Barrister Barthlomew Ugwoke-led committee to always carry every member along so as to give them sense of belonging, “because united we stand and divided we fall.”
Speaking at the event attended by representatives of the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, Dr. A Ekwo, the party’s senatorial candidate in Nkanu East district during the last general elections, Dr Benjamin Nwoye, emphasized the need for the existence of a focused and formidable opposition in any democratic system of government, saying without a strong opposition as ACN, there would be no true democracy.
Nwoye maintained that not until Nigeria as a nation begins to witness transparent elections where the electorate are allowed to choose their political leaders via the ballot boxes, the country would continue to face serious political and economic woes occasioned by bad programmes and policies of selfish leaders.
He therefore challenged the Professor Atahiru Jega led INEC to rise up and re-write the nation’s age-long bad electoral record by organizing a free fair and transparent polls come 2015..
