Nigeria has launched a nationwide grassroots flag football development initiative in partnership with the National Football League, NFL, and Browns Nigeria, in a move aimed at expanding youth participation in sports and creating structured pathways for talent development across the country.
The initiative, tagged “One Ball. One Flag. One Future,” will be officially unveiled on Wednesday in Lagos by the Nigerian American Football Association, NAFA, alongside its partners.
Under the programme, organisers will distribute 2,000 footballs and 5,000 flag kits to schools, educational institutions and community organisations nationwide as part of efforts to deepen access to flag football at the grassroots level.
Speaking ahead of the launch, Chief Executive Officer and Founder of NAFA, Babajide Akeredolu, described the initiative as a transformative step toward building a sustainable American football ecosystem in Nigeria.
According to him, the programme goes beyond sports equipment distribution and seeks to empower young Nigerians through leadership development, discipline and educational opportunities.
He said: “One Ball. One Flag. One Future is about more than equipment distribution. It is about access. It is about possibility. It is about ensuring that a child in any community across Nigeria can discover a sport that teaches leadership, teamwork, discipline, confidence and resilience.”
Akeredolu added: “Every football and every flag distributed represents an opportunity for a young person to dream bigger and pursue a brighter future. We are laying the foundation for a long-term development system that will benefit athletes, coaches, officials and communities across the country.”
NAFA noted that the initiative represents a major milestone in efforts to grow American football in Nigeria, where the sport remains at an emerging stage compared with football and basketball.
The association explained that the programme will establish a structured development pipeline spanning primary and secondary schools as well as tertiary institutions.
According to NAFA, participation pathways under the initiative include the K-12 Flag Football Development Programme, the Nigeria Secondary School Flag Football League, NSSFFL, and the Nigeria Collegiate Flag Football League, NCFFL.
The programme will also feature the Gridiron Gems Girls Development Initiative, designed to increase female participation in the sport and promote gender inclusion.
NAFA further stated that the partnership with the NFL and Browns Nigeria aligns with broader efforts to expand flag football across Africa through grassroots investment, institutional collaboration and youth-focused development programmes.
Flag football, a non-contact version of American football, has witnessed rapid global growth and is scheduled to make its Olympic debut at the 2028 Los Angeles Games, a development that has intensified international interest in the sport.
Organisers said the Lagos launch will bring together government officials, sports administrators, education stakeholders, youth leaders and development partners as Nigeria begins what they described as a new chapter in youth engagement and sports development nationwide.
