Ned Nwoko urges united Igbo support for Anioma state creation

Senator Ned Nwoko (Delta North) has called on political leaders and stakeholders across the South East to rally behind the creation of Anioma State as the sixth state of the zone, urging a unified approach to what he described as a strategic opportunity for the Igbo nation.

In a press statement released in Abuja and made available to journalists, Nwoko emphasised that the time has come for proponents of various state creation movements in the South East to set aside individual agitations and consolidate support for Anioma State.

This call comes as the campaign for Anioma State gains momentum within national discourse. The push recently received a boost when Senate President Godswill Akpabio expressed legislative and political support for the initiative, noting that the administration of President Bola Tinubu remains committed to considering proposals on state creation.

Senator Nwoko noted Akpabio’s description of the Anioma proposal as historically grounded—anchored on equity, administrative efficiency and balanced national development. According to him, the current campaign is receiving attention in the 10th Senate and holds potential to drive socio-economic growth.

Beyond its political implications, Senator Nwoko highlighted the geopolitical and economic prospects of creating Anioma State, particularly for the South East. He said the move could improve regional connectivity through Delta State, including access to coastal and riverine infrastructure.

According to him, this could enhance trade routes, logistics and investment opportunities across sectors such as agriculture, transport and industry.

“Anioma State would serve as a strategic economic bridge between the South East and the South-South, expand the geographical reach of the South East and strengthen its demographic and geographic position,” he said.

Senator Nwoko added that the proposal could also strengthen ties among culturally linked communities across Delta, the South East and parts of Edo State.

Calling for alignment, Nwoko urged advocates of other proposed states in the South East, including Anim, to work collaboratively and support a common objective where possible. He said such cooperation would strengthen regional advocacy efforts.

Senator Nwoko also encouraged stakeholders to build cross-regional and bipartisan support to advance discussions on Anioma State.

“The continued pursuit of multiple proposals may affect collective advocacy efforts. Anioma represents a cause that can bring people together across political and regional lines,” he said.
