Former Minister of Information and Culture and Chairman of the Eko Tourism Foundation (ETF), Lai Mohammed, has initiated moves to establish a tourism and investment alliance between Nigeria and Mexico, with the aim of positioning Lagos as a global tourism destination.
Mohammed made the proposal during a strategic visit to the Honorary Consul of Mexico in Lagos, Mr. Biodun Otunola, where he outlined plans to unlock tourism, cultural, and investment opportunities between both countries.
Central to the initiative are joint tourism exchange programmes, including familiarisation (FAM) trips, partnerships between Nigerian and Mexican tour operators, and deeper collaboration in cultural festivals and the creative industries.
The proposal also seeks to attract Mexican investment into Lagos’ expanding tourism and hospitality sector.
Drawing from Mexico’s globally recognised tourism success, Mohammed emphasised the importance of knowledge transfer and best practices, noting that Lagos stands to benefit significantly from such collaboration.
He described the Mexican Consulate as a critical platform for strengthening bilateral ties, adding that the partnership would boost tourism, deepen cultural connections, and drive sustainable economic growth.
Mohammed also invited Mexican investors, tourists, and industry stakeholders to explore Lagos, highlighting its vibrant cultural scene, large market, and dynamic business environment.
Beyond economic gains, he said the initiative would help reshape global perceptions of Nigeria by projecting a more accurate image rooted in creativity, resilience, and investment potential.
Earlier, he congratulated Otunola on his appointment, describing it as a milestone in Nigeria–Mexico relations and aligned with ETF’s mission to promote Lagos as a leading global destination.
Reaffirming the foundation’s mandate, Mohammed said ETF remains a non-profit, non-political platform committed to promoting tourism-friendly policies, fostering international partnerships, and showcasing Lagos globally.
He added that the foundation’s diverse membership across hospitality, culture, travel, and entertainment positions it to deliver impactful initiatives.
Mohammed also disclosed that ETF’s bid to become an affiliate member of UN Tourism has received support from the Federal Government.
In his remarks, Otunola acknowledged Lagos’ vast but underutilised tourism potential and expressed optimism that the proposed partnership would address key gaps in the sector.
He urged the Lagos State Government to take stronger ownership of the globally popular “Detty December” initiative, noting that structured support could transform it into a world-class tourism brand.
“We must harness the influence of Nigerian celebrities to project Lagos to a global audience,” he said, reaffirming Mexico’s readiness to collaborate on tourism development.
The meeting also featured members of the ETF delegation, including Erelu Dr. Abiola Dosumu, Mr. Gabriel Idahosa, Dr. Tunde Lawrenson, Dr. Iyadunmi Gbadebo, and Mr. Karl Hala.
Stakeholders say the engagement signals the beginning of a strategic Nigeria–Mexico partnership aimed at unlocking new opportunities in tourism, cultural exchange, and investment.
