ABUJA – The annual Conference and Retreat for Senior Police Officers has emerged as a pivotal platform driving institutional reform, strategic reflection, and capacity building within the Nigeria Police Force, the Chairman of the Board of Trustees of the Integrity Youth Alliance, Adewole Kehinde, has said.

Adewole made the remarks while speaking to journalists during a walkathon organised as part of activities marking Nigeria Police Week in Abuja.

He explained that the retreat, initially conceived as a professional development initiative, has evolved into a high-level forum where senior officers, particularly those of Commissioner of Police rank and above, examine operational challenges, refine policies, and develop actionable strategies to address Nigeria’s complex security landscape.

“The initiative—organised by Lenders Consult International Limited and led by Shina Philips—has been instrumental in sustaining the programme since its inception,” Adewole said. “Since the maiden edition in 2019 in Lagos, the conference has also been hosted in cities like Uyo, Owerri, and Abeokuta, reflecting its growing national relevance.”

According to Adewole, the retreat strengthens leadership capacity, promotes peer review, and encourages strategic exchanges to critically assess crime trends, operational gaps, and resource deployment. He added that it has fostered intelligence-led policing through improved daily crime analysis, situation reporting, and data-driven decision-making, shifting the force from a reactive to a proactive model.

The conference has also focused on technological advancement, including the digitalisation of police processes, strengthening intelligence systems like the Force Intelligence Bureau, improving inter-agency data sharing, and establishing intelligence fusion centres for real-time coordination in investigations.

Emerging threats such as cybercrime have prompted collaboration with technology firms and specialised agencies, while community policing initiatives are being reinforced through local engagement platforms, including radio, to enhance public trust and cooperation.

Adewole noted that the retreat has also reinforced discipline, professionalism, and accountability through improved information management, verification processes, biometric personnel documentation, and the proposed reintroduction of pocket notebooks to strengthen operational transparency

Addressing funding concerns, Shina Philips clarified that the retreat is privately driven through sponsorships and has never received funding from the Nigeria Police, dismissing allegations of financial misconduct.

Observers say the clarification is crucial to preserving the credibility of the conference, which is widely regarded as a cornerstone of ongoing reforms within the police institution.

Preparations for the next edition are underway, with stakeholders emphasizing that the retreat remains vital for aligning leadership priorities with operational realities, fostering innovation, and strengthening professionalism across the Nigeria Police Force, while contributing to measurable improvements in coordination, intelligence gathering, community engagement, and the modernisation of policing nationwide.
