FIFA has sanctioned the Nigeria Football Federation and the DR Congo Football Federation following disciplinary incidents that occurred four months after the disputed 2026 FIFA World Cup African play-off final.
In its latest disciplinary overview, FIFA said the two national associations breached provisions of its disciplinary code over the conduct of fans during the African World Cup play-off final, which DR Congo won on penalties.
According to the ruling, Nigerian supporters threw objects onto the pitch during the game which FIFA said the act violated Article 17 and Article 17.2.b of its disciplinary code and consequently fined the Nigeria Football Federation 1,000 Swiss francs.
The Congolese federation received a heavier sanction after FIFA ruled that its supporters used laser pointers during the match, an offence that contravenes Article 17.2.d of the code. The federation was therefore fined 5,000 Swiss francs.
FIFA noted that each decision was based on the specific merits and circumstances of the cases and added that the rulings remain subject to appeal.
However, the disciplinary summary made no reference to Nigeria’s protest over the alleged fielding of ineligible players by DR Congo, an issue the NFF reportedly raised after the match.
The Nigerian federation had submitted a petition to FIFA accusing the Congolese FA of deception in clearing some players for the national team despite questions surrounding their citizenship status. It also alleged that some of the “fraudulently registered” players featured in the play-off.
FIFA has yet to rule on the protest. Meanwhile, DR Congo have already announced their squad for the upcoming intercontinental play-offs later this month.
DR Congo will face the winners of the Jamaica versus New Caledonia match, with the final game deciding one of the remaining tickets to the 2026 World Cup.
