The Director General of the APC Digital Force, Pharm. Ikeagwuonwu Klinsmann, has strongly criticised the wave of mockery that trailed President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s brief physical stumble during his recent state visit to Turkey, describing such reactions as “unfortunate, unpatriotic, and deeply misplaced.”

In a statement from Stockholm, Sweden, Klinsmann addressed the incident that occurred during an official ceremony in Ankara, where President Tinubu momentarily lost his balance.

“What happened was a momentary stumble, the kind that can happen to anyone walking on unfamiliar or uneven ground,” Klinsmann said. 

He stressed that the incident was neither dramatic nor consequential, noting, “The President immediately regained his balance and proceeded with his official duties without disruption.”

Klinsmann took issue with attempts by some commentators to frame the episode as a health or capacity issue, calling such claims “speculative, insensitive, and unsupported by facts.” 

He observed that while a few voices on social media sensationalised the event, “the majority of Nigerians understood it for what it was — a harmless human occurrence.” 

He warned against letting a “small but loud online culture of mockery” define national discourse, arguing that such attitudes do not represent the values of Nigerians.

Addressing concerns about age and health, Klinsmann reminded the public that “ageing is a path everyone hopes to walk,” and urged basic decency and respect in public commentary. “No one would wish their parents, elders, or even themselves to be laughed at or humiliated in a moment of vulnerability,” he stated. He called for greater empathy, restraint, and humanity in public discussions.

Drawing parallels with global leaders, Klinsmann pointed out that figures such as the US President and Donald Trump have experienced similar stumbles without it undermining their leadership. “Mature societies understand the difference between momentary physical slips and the substance of leadership. Nigeria should hold itself to the same standard,” he said.

Klinsmann emphasised that the real focus should be on the diplomatic achievements of Tinubu’s Turkey visit, including enhanced cooperation in security, defence training, intelligence sharing, trade, infrastructure, and economic investment. 

“These are the issues patriotic Nigerians should be discussing,” he said, warning that reducing such engagements to online jokes “does a disservice to the country and weakens Nigeria’s image on the global stage.”

He concluded by commending President Tinubu’s “focus and resilience,” urging Nigerians to “rise above pettiness, embrace empathy, and support efforts that advance the nation’s standing and prosperity.”
