LAGOS In Yaba’s thriving tech district, Nigeria’s own “Silicon Valley”, innovation is accelerating at a remarkable pace. Startups are scaling, fintech platforms are multiplying, and millions of Nigerians are entering the digital economy. But beneath this momentum lies a growing vulnerability: the country lacks enough cybersecurity professionals to defend its expanding digital infrastructure.
This shortage mirrors a global trend. Worldwide, cybersecurity roles remain unfilled by the millions, and Nigeria’s rapid digital adoption has only widened the gap. As financial services, government systems, and everyday transactions move online, the demand for skilled defenders has never been more urgent. As Machine Learning solicitations grow, security involving certificate, encryption and web exploitation are very important so that information we give to LLM are not intercepted by hackers.
Across the country, a small but determined group of specialists is working to bridge this gap. Among them are young Nigerians who have tested their abilities in international arenas such as picoCTF, the cybersecurity challenge run by Carnegie Mellon University.
Sunday Nwanyim’s journey began in the lecture halls of Minna, where he earned his Bachelor’s in Computer Science with a focus on Cybersecurity in 2018. But his ambitions soon transcended local borders, leading him to pursue dual master’s degrees from two of America’s elite institutions: a Master of Science in Information Technology from Carnegie Mellon University, arguably the world’s top school for computer science, and a Master of Science in Business Analytics from Emory University’s Goizueta Business School in 2024.
This unique academic blend, mixing the hard science of applied machine learning with the strategic foresight of business analytics, has allowed him to operate at a rare intersection. He doesn’t just understand code; he understands the enterprise stakes behind it. Nwanyim’s experiences highlight both the promise and the challenge: Nigeria produces bright minds capable of competing on the world stage, yet the national demand for cybersecurity expertise continues to outpace supply.
Perhaps nothing illustrates his technical prowess better than his involvement with picoCTF, the world-renowned hacking competition run by Carnegie Mellon. Most experts merely strive to solve the challenges in these competitions. Nwanyim writes them. He has authored cryptographic challenges (such as the deceptive ReadMyCert puzzle) for the platform, designing the very digital labyrinths that thousands of aspiring hackers worldwide try to navigate.
Moving from solving challenges to creating them is a significant step that deepens one’s expertise. The art of crafting a good challenge revolves around balancing three core traits: novelty, educational value, and fun. A great challenge introduces a new idea or a clever twist on a known concept, making a solver think, “Ah, I didn’t know you could do that!”. More importantly, it must teach a valuable, be original, applicable skill, whether it’s using a specific forensics tool, exploiting a common vulnerability, or understanding a cryptographic weakness. In the cybersecurity world, this is the difference between being a player and being a game master. It signals a depth of understanding that allows him to reverse-engineer threats before they even happen.
Nwanyim’s ReadMyCert challenge invites participants on an adventure exploring certificate signing requests (CSRs), providing a .csr file that appears innocuous at first glance. Solvers must use tools like OpenSSL to decode the CSR, running commands such as openssl req -in ReadMyCert.csr -noout -text, revealing hidden details embedded in the certificate’s structure, where the flag is cleverly concealed in the subject field or attributes.
What makes “ReadMyCert” stand out is its subtlety: it masquerades as a simple file inspection task but teaches critical real-world skills in handling digital certificates, which are foundational to secure communications and often exploited in attacks.
Skills like those honed through challenges such as “ReadMyCert” are especially vital in regions with a booming fintech sector, where the stakes have never been higher. The consensus among experts is clear: expanding the cybersecurity workforce isn’t just about creating jobs it is an operational necessity to tackle the highly complex problems of the modern web.
The economic implications are indirect but significant. Global recognition from contributions like Nwanyim’s creates pathways for cross-border contracts, advisory roles, and high-value professional networks. It strengthens the case for outsourcing security work, opening regional offices, and investing in local cybersecurity training programs.
In this way, reputation becomes infrastructure, where a single trusted name can open doors for many others.
Stronger cybersecurity capacity has clear economic consequences. Fraud, data breaches, and service outages quietly drain billions from digital economies each year. Reducing those losses is not just a technical win; it is an economic one. Every vulnerability anticipated rather than exploited preserves capital, protects consumer confidence, and stabilizes growth. In places where digital finance is becoming central to everyday life, trust is a form of currency.
Seen in this light, contributions like Nwanyim’s ReadMyCert, even when crafted for global platforms like picoCTF, are integral to Nigeria’s economic story. They form part of a broader ecosystem where Nigerian expertise earns international trust, builds local capacity, and strengthens the foundations of the country’s digital economy.
When Nigerians shift from merely consuming technology to shaping its rules, writing challenges, stress-testing systems, defining standards, and contributing to global security discourse, the country’s posture fundamentally changes. Nigeria moves from being a soft target reacting to breaches to an active defender, capable of anticipating threats and setting the pace. This shift is not symbolic; it is strategic.
As Yaba’s innovation ecosystem expands, the country must confront this silent crisis. Without a stronger cybersecurity workforce, the gains of Nigeria’s digital revolution remain at risk, local progress shaped by global challenges.
Cybersecurity is, at its core, about people. Firewalls and encryption protocols mean little without skilled humans behind them. Nigeria’s advantage lies in its young, adaptive, and deeply engaged population. However, the question is whether the country will recognize this advantage in time and build the bridges that turn hidden talent into a national shield.
