A civic organisation, the Concerned Defenders of National Consciousness and Integrity, has urged the public to exercise caution in responding to unverified security-related claims circulating in the media

.

In a statement issued on Friday, the group said that certain reports making the rounds cite comments attributed to a retired senior military officer, Lt. Gen. Tukur Yusufu Buratai (rtd), but noted that the claims have not been independently confirmed.

The organisation emphasized the need for diligence and responsibility when discussing matters of national security, stressing that sensitive issues should be based on “verifiable facts and properly established information.”

According to the group, the use of unclear or unsupported statements in public discourse can create confusion and potentially undermine ongoing security efforts.

“This is a sensitive period for the nation, and narratives capable of causing public tension must be handled with caution,” the statement read.

The coalition advised Nigerians to critically assess security-related information, avoid drawing conclusions from single-sourced accounts, and rely on confirmed reports from credible authorities.

It further reiterated that issues with national security implications should be grounded in evidence-based assessments rather than assumptions or speculation.

“Our position is simple: sensitive allegations demand clear facts, not conjecture,” the group said.
