The 7th edition of the Cohesion Football Tournament has officially commenced with the conduct of its draws on Saturday, November 29, 2025, at the E-Centre, Yaba, Lagos, marking the beginning of what organisers say will be the most competitive season since its inception.
This year’s tournament will feature 48 teams, including 30 Under-15 boys’ teams, 10 Under-13 boys’ teams and eight female teams, with matches scheduled to hold on December 17 and 18, 2025.
Speaking at the event, Convener of the tournament, Mr. Damilare Obagbemi, said the initiative had grown beyond a community project to a major platform for youth development in Lagos.
“With every edition, we see more talent, more hope, and more communities believing in the power of football to change lives,” he said. “What started in 2019 as a simple initiative has evolved into one of the major youth tournaments in the state, alone that builds character, unity and opportunity.”
Also addressing participants, Vice Chairman of the Lagos State Football Association, Mr. Dotun Coker, commended the organisers for sustaining a platform focused on discovering young talents.
“We are excited to see an event dedicated to the development of young footballers. This aligns with our commitment to youth growth and empowerment, and you can count on our continued support,” he said.
A major highlight of the draw ceremony was the presentation of prize money to winners of the maiden Cohesion Challenge Football Game Show.
Adegbaju Samuel emerged winner and received ₦250,000, while Timileyin Awokoya placed second with a ₦150,000 prize.
Since its debut in December 2019 with only 12 teams from Mushin and Surulere LGAs, the tournament has recorded steady growth. By the 5th edition in 2023, participation had risen to 42 teams, including the introduction of 10 female teams.
The 6th edition in 2024 featured 44 teams, reinforcing the organisers’ commitment to gender inclusion and grassroots development.
The organisers said the draw not only signals the start of the new season but reaffirms the tournament’s mission to provide underserved grassroots teams in Lagos and Ogun States a structured platform to showcase their skills while promoting values such as teamwork, discipline and leadership.
The 2025 edition is supported by Viva, Firewood Jollof Rice, UAC Foods, DiosDelite, Beloxxi Biscuit, Ziba Beach Resort and the Harrison Obiefule Foundation.
