BENIN—PRESIDENT, Nigeria Union of Journalists, NUJ, Alhaji Mohammed Garba, has urged Edo State Government to provide employment for widows of the journalists who died in an accident involving the governor’s convoy.
The journalists are: Olatunji Jacobs, George Okosun, Fidelis Okhani and Chuks Ogu, who was earlier killed by unknown gunmen.
Garba made the request in Benin, Edo State, yesterday, when he paid a condolence visit to the state Deputy Governor, Dr. Pius Odubu, over the death of the journalists and the murder of the Private Secretary to Governor Adams Oshiomhole, Mr. Olaitan Oyerinde. He commended the governor for his financial and moral support so far rendered to the bereaved families.
Garba said: “While we sympathise with the bereaved families and the government, the manner the incidents happened is really questionable and we are happy the government has commenced investiga-tion into the incident.”
He added that Olaitan’s killing has further exposed the level of insecurity in the country.
Odubu, who expressed gratitude for the visit, assured that the deceased will not die in vain. He urged journalists to assist in putting pressure on the authorities to investigate the circumstances that led to their death.
He regretted that the journalists and Olaitan’s death had been politicised by certain individuals, rather than condole the bereaved.
