In a significant step towards addressing water scarcity, HACEY, with support from Access Bank, handed over ten newly constructed boreholes to underserved communities across the Obafemi-Owode and Ota Local Government Areas of Ogun State.

This milestone marks a major achievement for the ‘’Access to Clean Water Project’’, an initiative dedicated to enhancing access to safe and sustainable water sources in Nigeria’s rural areas.

The handover ceremony, attended by community leaders, local government representatives, and officials from both HACEY and Access Bank, celebrated the successful completion of boreholes in the following communities: Arigbawonwo, Omu Arogun, Omu Ajibode, Omu Isoku and Omu Aleku. Other communities include Abaren, Okeeran, Kemta, Afojupa, and Ogunruneletu

For these communities, access to clean and potable water has historically been a significant challenge, often leading to health issues and disproportionately burdening women and children who traditionally bear the responsibility of fetching water from distant or unsafe sources.

The new boreholes are expected to dramatically improve daily life, health outcomes, and economic productivity for thousands of residents.

Speaking at the event, Bamidele Oyewunmi, Program Manager at HACEY, emphasized the organization’s commitment to sustainable development and community empowerment. “Access to clean water is a fundamental human right and a cornerstone of community development.”

“We are incredibly proud to partner with Access Bank to bring this essential resource to these deserving communities.” He said.

Adeniyi Ajagunna, a representative from Access Bank, reiterated the bank’s dedication to corporate social responsibility and its belief in initiatives that foster sustainable impact.

He noted that their support for the Access to Clean Water Project aligns perfectly with the bank’s broader commitment to improving livelihoods and promoting well-being in the communities where they operate.

Speaking on behalf of the benefitting communities, the Baale of Ogunruneletu, Chief Bankole Taofeek Idowu, said: “HACEY and Access Bank have not just given us boreholes; they have given us life.

‘’They have given our children the chance to spend more time in school, our women more time for productive activities, and our entire communities’ better health and dignity. This is truly an act of profound compassion and commitment to humanity.’’

The project not only provides immediate relief from water scarcity but also sets the stage for improved sanitation, hygiene practices, and overall public health within the benefiting areas. Local community leaders expressed immense gratitude for the intervention, underscoring the transformative potential of reliable water access.
