Cancer remains one of the most complex and devastating health challenges of our time. It is not a single disease, but a constellation of countless variations, each with distinct causes, behaviors, and treatment responses. This complexity has long made the search for effective cures an uphill battle.

Yet, researchers worldwide continue to push the boundaries of science to uncover the molecular secrets that fuel cancer’s growth and spread. Among them is Augustine Madueke, a rising scientist at Wayne State University whose work is shaping the future of cancer drug discovery.
Madueke’s research focuses on protein post-translational modifications—small chemical changes that can profoundly influence how proteins function. Specifically, his work investigates acetylation and lipidation, two processes that regulate cellular behavior and, as his findings suggest, may act as switches for cancer progression. By mapping these hidden molecular signals, Madueke is helping the scientific community better understand how tumors form and proliferate, opening a path toward identifying new drug targets.
Using advanced mass spectrometry and chemoproteomics-based approaches, he has uncovered how acetylation reshapes protein structure and triggers cellular changes linked to cancer development. One of his most impactful discoveries is the role of Histone Deacetylase 11 (HDAC11) in tumor growth and metastasis. This breakthrough not only highlights HDAC11 as a potential drug target but also provides fresh direction to a field urgently in need of innovative therapies. Madueke’s expertise extends beyond the academic lab. Currently interning at Merck Sharp & Dohme (MSD), he contributes to improving the production of therapeutic proteins and antibodies—critical tools in modern cancer therapy. His exceptional performance earned him recognition as one of Merck’s top five interns, selected from more than 700 candidates, in recognition of his contribution to drug discovery research at Merck, underscoring his ability to bridge cutting-edge research with real-world applications.
In addition to his scientific achievements, Madueke is also a dedicated leader and mentor. As president of the Wayne State chapter of the National Organization for the Professional Advancement of Black Chemists and Chemical Engineers (NOBCChE), he works to recruit, retain, and uplift underrepresented students in STEM. His vision extends beyond personal success—he is committed to making science accessible, inclusive, and impactful for communities often left behind.
For Madueke, the fight against cancer is more than a technical challenge; it is a deeply human mission. Guided by his personal motto, “Before anything, be human,” he believes that compassion is as essential to progress as innovation.
