Sympathisers at the scene of the accident
TRAGEDY struck Saturday at the popular Cele Bus Stop along Oshodi-Apapa Expressway, Lagos when a trailer said to be carrying Dangote Sugar crushed five persons to death including a pregnant woman and left about 15 persons wounded. Sunday Vanguard gathered that the victims were waiting for bus shortly after the monthly sanitation exercise at about 10:25 a.m. when the trailer with Lagos registration number XC482-FKJ, coming from Mile 2, rammed into them.
Five persons died on the spot while about 15 injured persons were taken to an undisclosed hospital for treatment. The driver of the trailer was at press time in police custody. When Sunday Vanguard visited the scene of the accident, dead bodies of a man and the pregnant woman were lying on ground. Moments after the accident, the trailer caught fire, leading to near stampede on the nearby pedestrian bridge but the timely intervention of the police saved the situation.
According to an eye witness account, the trailer suffered break failure as it approached the bus stop, causing the driver to lose control of the vehicle which then swerved to where the victims were waiting for bus. Sunday Vanguard learnt that the driver of the trailer immediately ran to the nearby police station apparently to escape from the angry mob that immediately gathered.
