Constitutional lawyer and human rights activist Chief Mike Ozekhome, SAN, has praised the Au-Ukhua Carnival held in Iviukhua, Edo State, on Boxing Day for promoting unity and boosting agricultural and economic activities across communities in Etsako East Local Government Area.

Speaking at the 24th edition of the Nigerian Tourism Development Authority (NTDA)-sanctioned event, Ozekhome, who was honored as an Ambassador of the Au-Ukhua Carnival, encouraged the organizers to expand the celebration to include communities across Edo North. He noted that this would preserve Afenmai cultural heritage, enhance agricultural development, and unlock economic resources in the region for the benefit of Agenebode, Edo North, and Nigeria at large.

The vibrant carnival attracted dignitaries and participants from across Edo State, other parts of Nigeria, and the diaspora. Among those recognized as Ambassadors of the Carnival were Dr. Usman Tony Ododo, the Otono of Eppa Clan; Chief Mike Ozekhome; High Chief Abu Agbonoga; and High Chief Tony Akiotu.

In his welcome address, the President General of Iviukhua Community Worldwide, Dr. Kennedy Izuagbe, highlighted the carnival’s impact on empowerment and economic development for the Iviukhua people.

“Au-Ukhua brings all sons, daughters, and families together to ensure unity, development, and the sustainable utilization of our human, material, agricultural, and cultural resources,” Dr. Izuagbe stated.

This year’s event featured new additions, including a trade fair and a raffle draw, which boosted participation and tourism. A Toyota Sienna car was awarded to the raffle draw winner, while Itosimhe Michael Agwayambe was crowned Miss Au-Ukhua Carnival 2024 by Queen Akpejiori Rachael Onoshioagbe.

Dr. Izuagbe further remarked on the NTDA’s endorsement of the carnival, which has significantly elevated its status:

“Au-Ukhua Carnival has made Iviukhua a center of attraction in Weppa Wanno Land, the cultural hub of Etsako East and a top tourist destination in Edo State. It continues to draw growing numbers of tourists from around the world.”

The event showcased a cultural march past by Iviukhua families and elders from across Nigeria, including Lagos, Abuja, Kaduna, Ibadan, Zaria, and Benin. Traditional masquerade performances, dance groups, and a delegation from Cameroon added to the festivities’ vibrant atmosphere.
