Former Minister of Communications, Major General Tajudeen Olanrewaju (retd), has recounted how the late Maj. Gen. Godwin Abbe, a former Military Governor of Akwa Ibom and Rivers states, played a pivotal role in securing his clemency during his detention for the 1997 coup against the late Head of State, Gen. Sani Abacha.

Olanrewaju, describing Abbe’s passing as shocking, hailed him as a brilliant infantry officer and a patriotic statesman.

Abbe, who also served as General Officer Commanding (GOC), 2 Division Nigerian Army, passed away on Saturday, December 21, 2024, in Abuja at the age of 74.

In a statement issued by his media office, Olanrewaju said: “Our dear friend and colleague, Gen. Godwin Abbe, passed into eternity on Saturday night. May God grant him eternal rest.

“The demise of Maj. Gen. Godwin Abbe is a painful loss. He was a veteran of the Biafran Civil War, defending our nation against secession. A brilliant infantry officer, Abbe gave his all to Nigeria, applying exceptional skill and expertise to his duties.

“The country has lost a statesman, a consummate military general, a community leader, and a gentleman.”

Olanrewaju recalled Abbe’s crucial intervention during the 1997 coup saga, saying:

“While serving on the Provisional Ruling Council (PRC), General Abbe and other members pleaded for my clemency during my detention, where I faced a death sentence. His efforts saved my life, a debt I will always remember.

“Abbe served with exceptional talent, contributing to the systemic growth of the Armed Forces and the nation. His active role during the Civil War and in critical decision-making positions underscores his brilliance and dedication.”

Reflecting on their shared experiences, Olanrewaju added: “We fought in the same sector during the Civil War, giving our best for Nigeria. His passing is a rude shock to me and my family.

“May his soul rest in peace. My condolences go to his family.”
