The League of Northern Democrats (LND) has enjioned the federal government to implement economic policies that would encourage self reliance and eliminate reliance on food handouts in order to prevent the reoccurrence of food stampedes recorded across Nigeria.

This was contained in a statement signed by the league’s Spokesman, Dr. Ladan Salihu, in Abuja, yesterday.

The league said this in response to the tragic events which followed attempts to distribute food and other items to needy Nigerians by individuals and charity organizations in Abuja, Ibadan and Anambra States.

Salihu said, “The LND extends its heartfelt condolences to the families and communities affected by the recent tragic incidents during food distribution exercises in Ibadan, Abuja, and Anambra, which claimed 45 lives in stampedes. These heartbreaking events have left us deeply saddened.

“As Nigeria grapples with alarming levels of poverty, hunger, and destitution the generosity of individuals and organizations providing relief to the vulnerable is highly commendable.

“However, these tragedies highlight the urgent need for safer, more effective methods of delivering assistance.

“More importantly, we call on the government to develop economic policies that foster self-sufficiency, reducing or even eliminating the need for such handouts. Addressing the root causes of poverty and hunger is essential to prevent future occurrences of such tragic events.”

He further said, “We urge all stakeholders – government agencies, non-governmental organizations, religious bodies and community leaders – to adopt measures that prevent such incidents, including:

“Deploying trained personnel to manage crowds during distribution events to ensure order and safety; Implementing pre-registration of beneficiaries with designated time slots for collection to minimize overcrowding;

“Establishing multiple distribution centers to reduce congestion and improve accessibility for recipients; and Partnering with law enforcement to maintain peace and order during distribution activities.

“As we approach the end of the year, we urge all well-meaning individuals and organizations to adopt practices that uphold the dignity and safety of beneficiaries.

“Let us continue to demonstrate compassion and solidarity, working together to create a society where no one is left behind.

“Once again, we extend our deepest sympathies to the bereaved families and wish the injured a swift recovery. May acts of kindness bring hope and joy, never sorrow.”
