In a significant move to enhance innovation and bolster consumer safety within Oyo State entertainment sector, stakeholders have been urged to deepen their collaboration with the state government, regulatory bodies, and consumer rights organisations.

The call to action was made during the 6th Stakeholders’ Interactive Forum, titled: “Boom or Burst,” organized by the Oyo State Gaming and Lottery Board.

The forum, held yesterday, brought together a diverse array of participants, including industry leaders, game developers, consumer advocates, and representatives from regulatory bodies.

The event was designed to foster open dialogue and exchange of ideas on how to navigate the evolving landscape of interactive experiences in the state.

At the heart of the discussions was the emphasis on creating a balanced regulatory framework that supports innovation while prioritising the safety and well-being of participants.

Speaking on behalf of Governor Seyi Makinde at the event, his Chief of Staff, Otunba Segun Ogunwuyi, who spoke through the Permanent Secretary of the Cabinet Office, Mr. Hakkem Salami, highlighted the need for a robust regulatory system that encourages growth without compromising consumer protection.

Ogunwuyi called for all stakeholders to actively engage with the state government in crafting this framework, underscoring the administration’s openness to innovative ideas that align with its broader vision as articulated in the Omituntun 2.0 initiative.

“This roadmap aims to drive sustainable economic development in Oyo State from 2023 to 2027, positioning interactive experiences as a pivotal component of this growth strategy.”

“The Oyo State government reaffirmed its commitment to working alongside relevant bodies to address existing concerns within the interactive sector.”

“This includes a pledge to support local growth while ensuring that regulatory measures are conducive to innovation. The government aims to create an environment where both the industry and consumers can thrive,” he said.

In his opening remarks,Director-General of the Oyo State Gaming and Lottery Board, Mr. Olajide Boladuro, emphasised the critical importance of collaboration among all stakeholders involved in this ecosystem.

He expressed gratitude to Governor Makinde for his efforts in creating an enabling environment for businesses to flourish, noting the administration’s dedication to maintaining fairness and strict compliance with regulations.

Boladuro stressed that while innovation is essential for propelling the state’s economy forward, it must not come at the expense of consumer protection.

He articulated a vision where the industry can evolve dynamically while ensuring the safety of its participants.

“Our commitment is to safeguard our citizens, especially the youth, from potential harm while allowing them to enjoy the benefits of this vibrant space.”

“The theme of the forum, “Boom or Burst,” was chosen to reflect the rapid technological advancements and shifts in the industry,” he said.

Boladuro explained that the forum serves as a platform for gathering insights from operators and regulators to understand the implications of these changes on interactive experiences and the broader community.

Participants at the event, engaged in discussions around several key initiatives aimed at striking a balance between progress and safety.

Notable topics included stronger age verification systems to ensure that minors are adequately protected from accessing certain platforms, transparency and data privacy to protect consumer information, and addiction prevention mechanisms to mitigate the risks of harmful behaviors among users.

During a panel discussion, various stakeholders welcomed the government’s initiatives but expressed concerns about potential regulatory overreach.

They cautioned that overly restrictive measures could stifle creativity and innovation within the industry.

They emphasised the importance of a collaborative approach that engages government, industry players, and consumers in creating an environment that safeguards both participants’ interests and the integrity of interactive experiences.

The forum was rounded off with a renewed commitment from all parties to work towards a thriving, safe, and innovative environment in the state.
