A fertility expert, Dr Oye Victor has expressed concern over the risk of untreated high prolactin in women, linking it to most Infertility issues in women.
Victor, who is the Chief Executive Officer of Anaxon Wellness, a trado-medical facility, warned that prolactin in women remain a major health concern which is often neglected, as a result of low awareness around it.
Victor disclosed this during an interview, recently, highlighting the often-overlooked role of prolactin in reproductive health.
He said, “Prolactin, a hormone primarily known for its role in milk production, can, when elevated, disrupt the delicate hormonal balance necessary for conception”.
He explained that while high prolactin levels are often associated with symptoms like irregular periods and spontaneous milk production, many women experience no noticeable symptoms, leading to delayed diagnosis.
“Many women struggling with infertility undergo extensive testing, focusing on other factors, not considering their prolactin levels checked. This oversight can lead to prolonged periods of infertility and unnecessary emotional distress,” he submitted.
The award-winning naturopath emphasized the importance of comprehensive fertility testing, which includes prolactin level assessment.
He stressed need for increased awareness among both women and healthcare professionals about the connection between prolactin and infertility.
“Early detection and treatment of elevated prolactin levels, often through medication or lifestyle adjustments, can significantly improve the chances of conception.
“Prolactin issue can be detected through hormonal profile test and treatment options vary. At Anaxon, we encourage patients to first get their hormone levels balanced, after which we give herbs for hyperprolactinia upon confirmation through diagnosis”, he said.
He further urged research to determine the precise prevalence of undiagnosed prolactin-related infertility in the country and to develop more effective strategies for early detection and intervention.
