The John Fawole Chess Awards 2024 honored the outstanding achievements of Nigeria’s chess community, bringing together prominent figures and talented players.
Held at the Chevron Recreation Center in Gbagada, the event recognized exceptional players, arbiters, and organizers who have contributed to the sport’s growth. Notable attendees included Mr. Lekan Adeyemi, Vice President of the World Chess Federation (FIDE), and Prince Adewole Adeyinka, Vice President of the Nigeria Chess Federation.
“We are thrilled to celebrate the dedication and passion of our players and stakeholders who have worked tirelessly to promote chess in Nigeria,” said John Oyeyemi Fawole, founder of the awards.
A total of 30 awards were presented, honoring outstanding performances in various categories and recognizing individuals and organizations who have made significant contributions to chess development.
The award recipients include Man Player of the Year – Adegboyega Adebayo (2022), Bomo Kigigha (2023), Woman Player of the Year – Ogbiyoyo Perpetual (2022), Deborah Quickpen (2023), Junior Player of the Year (Boys) – Callistus Denyefa Eyetonghan (2022), Olisa Tennyson (2023) and Junior Player of the Year (Girls) – Onoja Iyefu Joy (2022), Deborah Quickpen (2023).
Special recognition awards were also presented to former president Ibrahim Babangida, Dr. Chioma Jovita, Dr. Donald Onyekwere, Mr. Kunle Kasumu, Marizu Nwokoma, Asana Kennedy, Babatunde Ashilokun, Professor Clement Bewaji, Dr. Apollos Akomaka, Olabode Sofoluwe, and Ivie Urieto.
