In 2024, Yobe State, located in northeastern Nigeria, faced its worst nutrition crisis in nearly two decades. Socio-economic deprivation and the Boko Haram insurgency had exacerbated the situation, leaving the state with a projected 510,000 children under five years old suffering from acute malnutrition, including 171,000 with severe malnutrition. The crisis, which threatened countless lives, was declared an emergency requiring immediate and effective intervention.

Dr. Okoli was pivotal in orchestrating a response to this dire situation. With his extensive background in health crisis management, he led efforts that resulted in a 40% success rate in alleviating the crisis. His leadership involved mobilizing resources, coordinating with various stakeholders, and implementing crucial health protocols. Between October 2023 and March 2024, an outbreak of Neisseria meningitidis serogroup C spread across seven states in Nigeria, including Yobe. This outbreak resulted in 1,742 suspected cases, 101 confirmed cases, and 153 fatalities.

In response to this crisis, Dr. Okoli spearheaded a large-scale vaccination campaign, aimed at reaching over one million individuals aged 1-29. His effective management of the vaccination program ensured that it penetrated rural and underserved areas, where the outbreak was most severe.
