THE average un infested Nigerian’s main needs amongst others, is to see government at work, pursuing the provision of his basics that would make life worth living like good roads connecting the rural with the urban, transportation at affordable rate, health facilities stocked and water.
These essentials were never pursued by the two immediate past governments in Edo State before Comrade Adams Oshiomhole emerged.
Conscious of his mission and the allegiance he owes the Edo electorate, he swung into action and today, the three senatorial districts of the state carry a general picture of dogged format of performance.
Edo citizens outside the state who are within Nigeria, have turned those of us at the home base into informants and the varied questions they ask, easily tells one the side they belong on the political scale in Edo State: “ has the government started the construction of the bridge over River Niger to link Agenebode in Edo State with Idah in Kogi State?”
“He has never said a thing like that during his campaigns I suppose you ought to know that should be a federal government project, but I can tell you that song has been on the lips of the federal government right from the tenure of Prime Minister Shehu Shagari as the present federal government equally sings the lullaby of a second Onitsha bridge across the River Niger.”
Another one called “what about the road from Ayogwiri-Apana-Okpekpe. Has it been finished and motorable now?, he asked contentedly.
“Where are you based?” I asked him.
“Well, I shuttle between Lagos and Abuja”.
“But you have a base?” I asked again.
Sounding corkish “well does it really matter where I am based? Listen, I am an edolite and I have the right to know about what your governor claims he is doing down there ok?”
“Are you familiar with Chief Dan Orbih?” I asked.
“Sure, sure. He is our party chairman in Edo State. What about him?”.
I chuckled.
“Hello, hello”—
I chuckled again, cleared my voice and resumed the dialogue: “you have proved beyond reasonable doubt that you are of the Peoples Democratic Party and people of Edo State have since known where to place you people after your eight fruitless years of governance, as regards the Apana-Okpekpe road project, check messrs two past TV stars , who are illustrious citizens of Okpekpe about the current position of the road leading to their domain. If you wouldn’t reach them, I request you to take a trip home.”
Of recent, Chief Dan Orbih, the state chairman of PDP in Edo State has been in the news, with much baseless efforts to fault Governor Oshiomhole’s performances. He talks while Oshiomhole is working and this reminds me of the realistic observation of the NUJ Press Center’s gardner in Benin City, Pa Igene when he said: “Oshiomhole is working and they are talking.”
The present scenario in Edo State has become a case study. In Edo South Senatorial District, the Oshiomhole led government is on course with the infrastructural developments in the state capital and in particular, the Urhonwon axis with the over fifty kilometers stretch road project located in the ward of his Deputy, Hon. Pius Odubu.
But the internal intrigues within the ACN in that zone in Edo South, unveils an in explicable dimension.
Print Media stories quote sources close to Pastor Ize-Iyamu as being opposed to the re appearance of the incumbent deputy Governor as Governor’s Oshiomhole’s running mate. There hasn’t been any realistic advanced and convincing reason why Odubu shouldn’t run as the Governor’s Deputy other than “chop chop expectations”.
Nowhere in the present constitutional format of governance in the country requires a deputy governor to present his or her own budget for his or her constituency or ward.
With the current dogmatic performance of Oshiomhole’s team in Edo State, one would expect the entire Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN ) party in Edo State to nip out rightly, this brewing sectional attitude of crying wolf “of we don’t know what the deputy governor is doing.”
From all indications, this is the most appropriate time for any serious and dedicated member of the ACN , at all levels, to demonstrate absolute commitment to deliver Oshiomhole and his deputy for a second term, rather than fragmenting the stable performance of the regime with petty demands.
One is however propelled to observe that if the deputy Governor is not flamboyant and reckless in dishing out things in any form in order to meet demands outside his reach, then, the call to drop him, has no basis, if as being said, Pastor Ize-Iyamu nominated and backed him to emerge as Governor Oshiomhole’s deputy at the first instance, what is his crime now? Is the team not delivering?
The ACN government in Edo State for the period it has been in charge, qualifies it for an absolute return for a second term.
