The Jigawa Agency for Mass Education graduated 2,187 students in the first batch of its advanced literacy programme, the Commissioner for Education, Prof. Haruna Wakili, said.
Wakili made the information known in Dutse on Thursday at an event to mark the World Literacy Day .
He explained that 1,013 students had completed the two-year post -literacy programme equivalent to the Primary School Leaving Certificate, while the remaining 1,174 graduated from the two-year Continuing Education Programme.
The commissioner said more than 20,000 pupils had completed the basic literacy programme in the state.
Wakili stated that the Agency for Mass Education had begun functional literacy programme for women in 17 local government areas.
He said the women would acquire skills, such as sewing, knitting, soap making, among others, through the programme.
The commissioner however, reiterated the determination of Governor Sule Lamido’s administration to reduce the level of illiteracy among the people of the state. (NAN)
