TRACON ‘ll serve civil, military operations – NAMA boss

By Daniel Eteghe & Okebugwu Chinomnso

LAGOS – Managing Director of the Nigerian Airspace Management Agency, NAMA, Mr. Nnamdi Udoh, Thursday said that the Total Radar Coverage of Nigeria, TRACON, will serve both civil and military aviation operations in the country.

Speaking during a facility tour of members of the House of Representative Committee on Aviation to the agency at the Murtala Muhammed Airport, Lagos, Udoh noted that the call by the military to have their own radar was not necessary.

He affirmed that it was the Air Force that started the TRACON project but were unable to execute it.

”The air force started this TRACON project but they could not execute it, the TRACON covers the total airspace both military and civil aviation. They (military) need long range primary radar because they do not have it.

“If they need their own radar they should not marry it to NAMA, they should ask for funds on their own but what they need is a command and control centre,” he said.
