WARRI— MOBILE policemen and other private protection outfits with security dogs have been deployed to the Federal University of Petroleum Resources, FUPRE, Effurun, Delta State, following the rising tension in the school over recent crisis in the institution.

Meanwhile, Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU, Federal University of Petroleum Resources, FUPRE, Effurun, Delta State chapter, yesterday, refused to call off the work-to-rule declared by the union last Tuesday, despite the take-over of the university by an administrator, Prof. Alhassan Bichi.

At a congress held shortly after Prof. Bichi, who, until his recent appointment, was the director, Academic Standards, National Universities Commission, NUC, addressed the workers, ASUU resolved that the problem that led to their action, which was alleged unlawful recall of the Vice Chancellor, Prof. Babatunde Alabi and Registrar, Dr. L. Onwuka, had not been addressed.

Also, traditional Prime Minister of Ugbomro, the host community to FUPRE,

Chief Ambrose Olughor, told the administrator on Monday that the Minister of Education violated the decision of the Governing Council by unilaterally recalling the Vice-Chancellor and Registrar from accumulated leave.

The intimidating presence of security men has instilled fear among the workers, who demanded their exit, yesterday. Arising from a meeting on Monday, the Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU, condemned the militarisation of the institution.

ASSU, however, resolved to work with the peace team headed by Prof. Alhassan Bichi, who arrived the campus, Monday, and addressed staff and all stakeholders on FUPRE crisis.

In a communiqué signed by the Chairman, Dr. Akpofure Rim-Kukeh and Secretary, Dr. Duke Okoro, ASSU resolved that the executive should develop the memorandum with input from members  and submit to the Prof. Bichi peace team.
