ONITSHA-Commercial banks situated along Ezemewi road, Nnewi, may face hard times, following the insistence of the state government and lawmakers in Anambra State House of Assembly that some of their structures be demolished to allow for a quick execution of the road project awarded a few years ago.

Indications to this development emerged yesterday when the Deputy Speaker and vice chairman, House Committee on Works and Housing, Prince Chukwudi Orizu, visited the site as part of his oversight function in his constituency.

The road, popularly called Bank road, was awarded to Master Holdings Construction Company some years ago but had since been moving at snail speed because of the structures erected by some banks and other buildings obstructing the construction of the road.

Visibly angered by the development, the Deputy Speaker ordered the owners of some of the banks to demolish them without further delay.

Manager of the firm, while conducting Orizu and some stakeholders in the community round the project site, attributed the delay in the execution of the project to the refusal of the banks to remove their structures.

He assured that the job would be completed on schedule as soon as the banks complied with the order.

However, the deputy speaker praised the construction company for the quality of work done so far on the road and urged the youths, market leaders, local government and stakeholders to cooperate with the firm to ensure that the job was completed on schedule.
