Sen. Chukwumerije rolls out red carpet for Taekwondo heroes

Senator Uche Chukwumerije will tomorrow in Abuja roll out the red carpet for the victorious Team Nigeria Taekwondo team to the 2011 All Africa Games in Maputo, Mozambique.

The reception, which would be witnessed by government functionaries, diplomats and important national leaders, is designed to celebrate the heroics posted by the team at the Games and to bolster them ahead of the 2012 London Olympic qualifiers in Egypt.

According to a statement signed by Senator Chukwumerije, whose two sons, Uche Chukwumerije Jnr and Chika, won gold and a silver medals respectively at Maputo 2011, tomorrow’s high-octane reception, is part of the fulfillment of the pledge made by the Senator, at the the All Africa Games in Maputo, where he was on hand to watch and cheer the team to victory.

Senator Chukwumerijie said that the fact that taekwondo won 10 medals at the Maputo Games. has shown that the sport is growing from strength to strength and is destined to become even more popular if the taekwondoists are motivated by corporate Nigeria.

The famous Nigerian lawmaker noted that tomorrow’s occasion was aimed at getting financially viable individuals, corporate firms and government to see the reasons why they should invest in Taekwondo, which has the potentials of doing the country proud at the next Olympic Games holding in 2012 in London.

He added that the event was going to be used to re-assess the future of the sports in becoming lucrative medal-winning discipline for Nigeria at continental and international competitions.

The highlight of the occasion would see Senator Chukwumerije giving N500, 000 to gold medalists, N250, 000 to silver medal winners and N150, 000 to bronze medalists.

A total number of 16 Taekwondoists featured for Team Nigeria at the Maputo Games, where they won 10 medals at the Games.

Remarkably, Taekwondo accounted for two out of Nigeria’s gold medals’ haul, one silver and seven bronze medals.

The athletes’ feat ensured that Taekwondo finished in fourth place behind athletics, table tennis and badminton on the sports that won the most medals for Team Nigeria at the All Africa Games.

Senator Chukwumerije’s son, Chika, won a bronze medals at the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing.
