Irate policemen kill girl, wound 9 others

ADO-EKITI— There was pandemonium in Ido Ekiti, headquarters of Ido/Osi Local Government Area of the state yesterday when some un-named policemen reportedly killed a 17 year-old- girl identified as Tayo Abe, while two of her siblings sustained serious injuries.

According to an eye witness, when the trio of Tayo, Adeniyi and Ayodeji got to the police check point, they were  allegedly  ordered by the police on duty to off-load the content of their bags.

It was gathered that there was an argument between them and the police and that it was at that point that one of the policemen opened fire on the trio.

Tayo was said to have died on the spot, while Adeniyi and Ayodeji were lucky to still be alive after being hit by the policeman’s bullets on the right arm and the leg respectively.

They were said to have been rushed to hospital by some good samaritans for medical attention.

No fewer than seven other members of the community including the personal assistant to the monarch of the town, Mr Taye Eyiola, were also said to have received gunshot wounds as the policemen shot at protesters.

One the victims, Seun Babatunde was reportedly hit by a stray bullet while praying inside a mosque nearby.

The killing of the girl provoked immediate protest by the people of the community who reports said attempted to burn the police station in the town.

Vanguard gathered that in the ensuing melee, police fired back at the protesting youths, where about six others including the personal assistant to the monarch of the town, Mr. Taye Eyiola, who sustained gunshot wounds.

Vanguard gathered that Tayo and two of his siblings identified were said to have gone to the farm to harvest maize when she met her untimely death.

It took the intervention of the Olojudo of Ido-Ekiti, Oba Idowu Faboro and some aides of Governor Kayode Fayemi, including the chief cecurity officer and the senior special assistant on Internal Security, Mr. Deji Adesokan, to calm the angry residents.

The Acting Police Public Relations Officer in Ekiti State Police Command, Mr. Victor Babayemi, acknowledged the incident.

His words: “A woman was shot and killed under a suspicious circumstances and some youths in the town set part of the police station in the town ablaze but they were stopped before they could destroy the whole place.  The policeman who fired the shot has been arrested and is undergoing interrogation. Some of the youths who committed the arson have also been arrested and detained. The situation is calm now.”
