Edo State Commissioner for Youth and Sports, Hon Iziegbe Anita Evbuomwan has attributed the failure of the Super Eagles to qualify for the 2012 African Nations Cup to the lack of commitment and discipline on the part of the players.
Speaking in Benin City, after the shameful exit of the Super Eagles by their Guinean counterpart at the Abuja Stadium, Hon Evbuomwan noted that the home team played as though nothing was at stake in the match, adding that several goal opportunities was lost by the Eagles.
“I have not stopped wondering why our players chose to embarrass the nation because they play better football at the various clubs. A call to serve this nation at such critical times was treated with levity. I think those players have forgotten their root”. The Commissioner added.
While urging soccer fans to accept Coach Samson Siasia’s apology, Hon Evbuomwan maintained that he introduced disciplinary actions against the players even at his own expense, adding that these international players need to know they are not indispensable.
“Nigeria’s failure to qualify for the 2012 African Nations Cup should not be seen as a complete loss, perhaps it is time we put our house in order. It now behooves on the Nigerian Football Federation to take drastic steps towards the reviving of grassroot football to avert the complete termination of Nigeria from the list of football giants. It is time we stooped living in illusions and accept that all is not well with our football so that we can use the next few years to build formidable teams thereby returning the glory days of Nigeria”.
Hon Evbuomwan said.
She however, wished the Super Eagles success in their friendly match against Ghana today, noting that their winning this friendly will perhaps redeem their scandalous performance last Saturday in Abuja.
