The Channel O Music Video Awards is one of the top and most recognized awards in the African music and entertainment industry.

It is organized yearly by Channel O, a South African Music channel operated by Multichoice’s DSTV a cable network that transmits and beams its service around the African continent to more than 12 countries including Nigeria and South Africa.

This year’s CHOMVAs took place at the Sandton Convention Centre in Johannesburg, South Africa and was anchored by Lungile Radu and Thomas Gumede. It was a glamorous night, where winners were dominated by two countries; Nigeria and South Africa.

The biggest award of the night – Most Gifted Video of the Year was won by South African hip-hop trio Teargas for their video “Party 101”. But one of the biggest ‘coups’ of the night was Mo’Cheddah‘s victory in the Most Gifted Female category. Her video for “If You Want Me” featuring Othello beat off competition from Lizha James, Thembi Seeta, Witness and Kenny St Brown to win. The young artist recently released her debut album ‘Franchise Celebrity’ and also received a nomination for the 2010 MTV Africa Music Awards (MAMAS) as well.

Other winners on the night included Nigeria’s P-Square for their track “E No Easy” featuring J-Martins in the Most Gifted Duo, Naeto C, 2Face and General Pype rounded up the list of winners with The Most Gifted Ragga and Dancehall Video for CHAMPION REMIX featuring Dagrin, Vector, Naeto C, Sasha P & GT The Guitarman.

The song which was executive produced by Toks Asher Young for Podium Vybez & Tola Odunsi for Storm 360, emerged winner on the night after stiff competition from 2009 winner BUFFALO SOULJAH – TOO MANY OF ME, SAMINI – SWEET MISTAKE, WYRE – UPRISING & KWELA TEBZA FT VARIOUS ARTISTS – BETTER DAY(REMIX)

Reacting to the award, Young said it is always a proud moment when hard work is recognized and rewarded. “This award is indeed proof that, whatever is worth doing is worth doing well, especially coming off the back of the licensing deal we just signed with SuperSport”, he added.

He went further to say that the awards marks the resurgence of the reggae and dancehall genre in Nigeria. Toks Asher Young is co-founder of Podium Vybez and also General Pype’s manager.
