Civil servants, school children shun duty posts in Kano

BY ABDULSALAM MOHAMMED

KANO – In Kano State, most civil servants and school children shunned offices and classrooms yesterday following the confusion that trailed late night decision of Nigerian Labour Congress, NLC, to suspend its planned three-day warning strike.

Though there was heavy down pour Tuesday that lasted up to yesterday in the state, but a visit to Audu Bako secretariat that accommodates most of the ministries and parastatals showed deserted building as at 10.00am, however findings revealed that the few ones at their duty posts were mainly workers in the senior cadres.

It was the same story at Federal Secretariat located along Katsina Road where, apart from watchmen, few workers at their duty posts made it by noon.

Also, most private schools in the commercial city had their gates locked, while some few teachers that reported for work in some public schools had to contend with the absence of their pupils.

At the Nigerian/Egyptians Model School, a watchman who identified himself as Usman in company of some people suspected to be staff of the school turned back parents who had taken their wards to school, informing them that the school was closed.

In the meantime, commercial activities picked up late noon in the city following the restoration of services by commercial drivers who had earlier withdrawn their services from the major routes.

However most commercial banks opened for businesses on time as the mad rush and panic withdrawals noticed on Tuesday had stopped.
