Fire razes Navy quarters

By Samuel Peter
LAGOS—Two bungalows housing senior Navy officers along Kirikiri canal, Lagos, went up in flames Wednesday, destroying property that could not be immediately valued.

Though there was no official report from the Navy explaining the cause of the of the fire which lasted several hours before the arrival of fire service men,  reports gathered at the scene revealed that it could not be unconnected with electrical fault. It was gathered that thick smoke was sighted emanating from one of the bungalows immediately power was restored.

The fire which could not be immediately contained, was said to have spread to the second bungalow.
Reports  said Navy personnel, most of whom were on duty were alerted, while the few ones around battled to contain the fire until the arrival of fire service men.

But the development took a violent dimension after two journalists with Vanguard, a reporter on Crime desk and a Photographer who had gone to cover the incident were harassed by some naval personnel.

The unidentified personnel were said to have seized the photographer’s camera as well as the reporter’s folder and where they were forced to write an apology letter for what was described as ‘invasion of the quarters without permission’.

One Lieutenant O.G Ogigbe said to have been at the Mess later directed that the camera and folder be handed over to them. But this was not done until every phonograph of the scene was completely deleted from the camera, with one of them accusing the journalists of planning to misinform the public of another bomb explosion.
