Rivers State Governor Rotimi Amaechi has said he is not supporting any particular candidate in the state PDP primaries which commences tomorrow.
Making the governor’s stand public, Media and Publicity Director of the Amaechi 2011 Re-election Campaign Organisation, David Iyofor said: “Governor Amaechi is not backing, sponsoring or promoting any candidate.”
Iyofor, who is also Senior Media Adviser to Gov. Amaechi, noted that as father to all in Rivers PDP, the governor would not support one aspirant against another.
“He is a leader and father to all the aspirants on the platform of PDP in the state and would not take decisions that can cause disharmony such as backing or pitting one candidate against another.
“All aspirants for different positions in the state are, therefore, advised to leave the governor out of their campaigns and focus on slugging it out at the primaries which will ultimately decide their fate.”
Iyofor added that “Whoever emerges from the primaries will, however, enjoy the governor’s support.
“If in any event the aspirants come together to produce a consensus candidate at the party primaries, the governor will also give his support to that candidate,” he said.
“From the State house of Assembly, federal constituencies to local governments and all other levels of aspirants, the primary is where to get your mandate not the governor’s office.”
Amaechi, however, assured that the elections in the state will be free and fair, starting from the primaries.
