Abuja — An Abuja Chief Magistrate’s Court has discharged one Olabisi Okogwele, who allegedly bathed her husband and child with acid.

The accused, who was standing trial before Chief Magistrate Okeagu Azubike, was charged with causing grievous harm to her husband and child.

She was remanded in prison custody on November 15.

The court discharged Okogwele on Wednesday following the prosecution’s application to transfer the case to the FCT Criminal Investigation Department, CID, for further investigation.

Mr. Abdullahi Adamu, a Police Corporal and Prosecutor, brought before the court an application to terminate the first information report.

He said this was an instruction from the FCT Commissioner of Police.
Adamu said the case was to be transferred to the FCT CID for discreet investigation.

Counsel to the accused, Mr. John Itodo, urged the court not to grant the request, saying that his client was still in the prison custody.

He said he was not sure if the prison authorities would allow him access to his client “since she hasn’t been brought to the court”.

Azubike heeded the plea of Okogwele’s counsel and stood down the matter till the arrival of the accused.
“Following the prosecution’s application, the accused has been discharged in the interest of justice,” Azubike said.

Earlier, the chief magistrate had granted a N300,000 bail to the accused with two sureties in like sum.
The accused, however, arrived in court before the decision to discharge her was taken.
