The issue of entering Syria to provide humanitarian assistance stands very high on the United Nations’ agenda, Swedish Prime Minister, Stefan Lofven, said.

Lofven spoke ahead of a meeting on children’s rights in armed conflict at the UN Security Council on Monday.

“We need the access for the humanitarian aid and that responsibility lays right now, as we can see, on the Syrian Government that at least has to allow the entry into the country.

“It is very, very high on the agenda,’’ Lofven, who presides with the UN Security Council in July, said.

According to Lofven, Sweden is working with other UN Security Council member states to address the deteriorating situation in Syria.

Lofven, when asked whether he believes Jordan should open the border with southwestern Syria, said the issue should be decided by the two countries that would be most affected by the outcome of such a move.

Syria has been engulfed in an armed conflict since 2011 with opposition groups and extremist organisations fighting the Syrian Arab Army in an attempt to topple the government of President Bashar Assad.
