BENIN CITY — A stalwart of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) and former Edo State governorship aspirant, Barrister Kenneth Imansuaghon, has described the late Chief Dan Osi Orbih as a courageous, kindhearted and loyal politician whose death has created a major vacuum in Edo State’s political landscape.

Imansuaghon, in a statement mourning Orbih’s death, said he received the news with shock and sadness, recalling the deceased as a committed politician whose kindness extended to people facing difficult circumstances.

He particularly recalled Orbih’s support when he was involved in an accident and receiving treatment at a hospital in London.

“When I had an accident, Dan was one of those who sent money to me in my hospital bed in London. Dan Orbih, late Chief Tony Anenih and Senator Clifford Ordia stood by me during that difficult period.

“I will never forget that gesture. Some of us can only reciprocate such kindness today through prayers and honouring his memory,” he said.

Imansuaghon also recalled his political relationship with Orbih during the administration of former Governor Adams Oshiomhole, when they both operated in the opposition in Edo State.

He described Orbih’s residence as a meeting point for party members and advocates of democracy during the period.

“Dan was a man of uncommon courage. At the height of the political struggle, his house became our meeting point. He never wavered in defending democracy and standing by those he believed in,” Imansuaghon said.

The former governorship aspirant, popularly known as the “Rice Man”, also recalled Orbih’s personality during political campaigns, describing him as someone who brought humour and entertainment into political activities while motivating supporters.

He said Orbih remained committed to his party and passionate about the people of Edo State.

“Under his leadership, we both toured the 192 wards campaigning. He was kind-hearted, loyal to his party and deeply committed to the people of Edo State,” he said.

Imansuaghon further recalled what he described as Orbih’s fairness during the 2022 national delegate contest in Esan South-East Local Government Area.

He alleged that Orbih came under pressure to remove his name from the delegate list over concerns that he would support Atiku Abubakar rather than Nyesom Wike in the PDP presidential contest.

According to him, Orbih resisted the pressure and allowed him to remain on the list, after which he won the delegate contest.

“He resisted the pressure and kept my name on the list. He said his conscience would not allow him to remove my name from the delegate list,” Imansuaghon said.

Imansuaghon said Orbih’s contribution to Edo politics and his relationships with party members would remain part of his legacy.

He expressed condolences to Orbih’s wife, children and the entire family, particularly Frank and Ferd Orbih, praying for strength for them to bear the loss.

“My wife and I send our heartfelt condolences to his family. May God comfort them all. We will never forget the gift of Dan Orbih to humanity and to Edo politics,” he added.
