Team Delta has delivered a commanding performance at the South-South Zonal Elimination of the National Intermediate Games, securing qualification in every team sport contested at the zonal championship. 

The feat, achieved under the leadership of the Chairman of the Delta State Sports Commission, Hon. Onoriode Joshua “Onos” Oborevwori, represents a major step toward fulfilling his vision of positioning Delta State as a dominant force in grassroots sports in the South-south region and Nigeria, and gives the state a significant boost ahead of the National Intermediate Games.

Team Delta emerged among the successful qualifiers in Cross River State (Female and Mixed Doubles), Basketball (Male and Female), Beach Volleyball (Male and Female), Cricket (Female), Football (Male and Female), Handball (Female), Hockey (Male), Rugby (Male and Female), and Volleyball (Male). The scale of the qualification reflects the hard work by the leadership of the sports commission in harnessing the depth of talent available to the state across multiple sporting disciplines, with the athletes combining tactical discipline, physical intensity and competitive resilience throughout the elimination series.

Beyond the results, the performance represents another positive step in the Delta State Sports Commission’s grassroots sports development drive, particularly in identifying, grooming and exposing young athletes to high-level competition. The sweeping qualification also underscores the growing dominance of Delta State in grassroots sports and reflects the impact of the deliberate development vision being pursued under the leadership of Onoriode Oborevwori.

With the national stage now beckoning, Team Delta will be to build on its impressive South-South showing and translate its zonal success into podium finishes at the National Intermediate Games. The Delta State Sports Commission, under the leadership of Onos Oborevwori, emphasized its resolve to sustain its support for the contingent as preparations intensify, while athletes and coaches remain focused on maintaining the momentum and further strengthening Delta’s reputation as a powerhouse in Nigerian sports.

Following the South-South qualifications, Delta finished first with 14 teams, ahead of Bayelsa with seven teams in second position and Rivers with seven teams in third position. Akwa Ibom placed fourth with three teams, Cross River fifth with three teams, while Edo occupied sixth position with two teams.

Team Delta now heads into the national championship with one clear objective: to compete for honours and keep the Delta flag flying high.
