OSOGBO — A historian, Dr. Temitope-Maberu Fagunwa, has raised questions about the “Summer Programme” introduced by Osun State University (UNIOSUN) to support students with outstanding courses.

Fagunwa, in a statement made available to newsmen in Osogbo, said the initiative should be subjected to broader academic discussion, particularly regarding its structure and the approach adopted to support students.

He argued that programmes designed to assist students with outstanding courses should provide adequate academic support and allow participants sufficient opportunity to improve their understanding of the affected subjects.

Fagunwa also questioned the use of the term “Summer Programme”, saying universities should consider the local academic environment when designing and naming such programmes.

He noted that similar programmes in other countries could serve different academic purposes, including specialised study, professional development and academic enrichment.

The historian called for greater attention to teaching methods and other academic support mechanisms for students who require additional assistance with their studies.

He also urged universities to maintain regular engagement with students and other stakeholders when developing programmes that affect teaching and learning.

Fagunwa said such engagement would help promote understanding of academic policies and strengthen the relationship between university authorities, students and other members of the academic community.

He further called for continued discussion among stakeholders on issues affecting the quality of teaching, learning and student support in Nigerian universities.

He said universities should remain focused on their core academic responsibilities while creating an environment that enables students to pursue their studies effectively.
