…Calls for unity, cautions against divisive politics, urges responsible media conduct

Governor of Yobe State, Mai Mala Buni, has called on Nigerians to project the country positively, urging that its strengths should define its image rather than its challenges.

Buni made the appeal on Thursday during a meeting with the Director-General of the Institute for Peace and Conflict Resolution, Joseph Ochogwu, warning that rising divisions and negative narratives could weaken national cohesion.

He said the country’s shortcomings should be viewed as opportunities for improvement, not causes for despair, stressing that all citizens share responsibility for sustaining peace and unity.

The governor expressed concern over divisive remarks by some political actors, noting that such statements heighten tensions instead of promoting reconciliation. He emphasised the importance of dialogue, cautioning that inflammatory rhetoric could deepen existing fault lines.

While acknowledging Nigeria’s challenges, Buni said its positive attributes must not be overshadowed by the actions or statements of a few individuals.

He also criticised sections of the media and political class for amplifying negative narratives, which he said could undermine national confidence and unity.

Buni condemned any celebration of attacks on security personnel, describing such reactions as damaging to national morale and disrespectful to those safeguarding the country.

On democratic practice, the governor stressed that freedom must be exercised responsibly, adding that respect for institutions is vital for stable governance. He warned that democracy should not be reduced to disorder but guided by rules, restraint and civility.

He further raised concerns over abusive content on social media, calling for greater responsibility in its use to curb harmful discourse.

The governor lamented what he described as excessive politicking, saying it often distracts from governance and slows development efforts. He cautioned against actions driven by personal ambition at the expense of national interest.

Buni also urged religious leaders to continue promoting peace and unity, warning against messages that could incite division.

Looking ahead, he called on political actors to prioritise Nigeria’s unity above all other considerations.

Earlier, Ochogwu commended Buni’s commitment to peace and national cohesion, noting that his contributions remain important in advancing reconciliation efforts.
