The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) has clarified its position on the recent directive issued by the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC), mandating compensation for subscribers affected by poor network service across the country.
In a statement signed by Comrade Ahmad Mallawa, National Vice President of the association on behalf of the student body, NANS said the directive did not emerge as a response to any recent individual comment or public agitation, but rather followed a structured and ongoing regulatory process by the Commission.
“For the avoidance of doubt, this directive is not a reaction to any recent individual comment or public outcry,” the statement read. “The process leading to this decision has been ongoing, with the Commission’s position and regulatory direction clearly established as far back as March 29, 2026.”
The association described as “inaccurate and misleading” claims by individuals seeking to take credit for the policy, stressing that the directive is the outcome of institutional planning, regulatory review, and the NCC’s sustained commitment to consumer protection.
“It is therefore inaccurate and misleading for anyone to claim personal credit for a policy that is the product of institutional planning,” NANS stated.
While acknowledging the importance of civic engagement, the student body cautioned against the spread of narratives that distort facts or attempt to personalize national policy achievements.
“NANS encourages active civic engagement, but we strongly caution against the spread of narratives that distort facts or seek to personalize national policy achievements,” the statement added.
The association further commended the NCC for what it described as a proactive and consumer-focused move, urging that the Commission be given full recognition for its role.
“The NCC, as an independent regulator, deserves full recognition for this proactive directive. Undermining this process by attributing it to individual influence diminishes the integrity of our institutions,” it said.
NANS reiterated its commitment to promoting truth, responsible advocacy, and ensuring that credit is appropriately assigned in matters of national importance.
